Apparently I have made a bad setting in the xfce4 settings display gui
and can no longer get a working xfce desktop display.

I can ssh into the problem computer [fedora 28] but have no idea what
file I can mess with to try and get back to a default condition.

Any suggestion appreciated,

Bob

Figure out what the Xfce hidden directory(ies) is(are) and rename them.

That way when you go to log into your account it will be like a new
account setup.

Of course you loose everything you have customized....

When toy ssh in, go to root, do "init 3", rename /home/user_name/.local
to /home/user_name/local_bak and /home/user_name/.config
/home/user_name/config_bak. Do "init 5".

That way you still have the settings files, if you need them. Delete
them if you are ready with them. The 'init 3' first is so the wrong
settings are not saved.

That is where I am this morning, as a new user startxfce4 produces a
good desktop display but i normally do a lot of configuration to make it
the way I want it to be and now that is a default display. I can go from
there if need be, fortunately it is a second computer I use to try new
releases, etc. Presently it is Fedora 28 [and 29b on another hd] while
this computer runs Fedora 27. I am still trying to get F28 configured to
my satisfaction, and now F29beta is out!
Often it is `$HOME/.config/xfce4`.
In the version of xfce in this Fedora 27 computer there is a "display"
file that looks like it could be removed to restore things to default
but it is not in the version in the Fedora 28 problem computer. I don't
know the version numbers, or at least where to find them?

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions,

Bob
Kind regards,
aul

Look at the file .xsession-errors in your home directory, it may well
give you some information on what's wrong.

All I see is a huge list comprised mainly of statements about "parsing
errors. These last few lines are typical but I don't see anything I
recognize as display related but I may be missing it ...
