Dear All

Is there some screen-saver with a working clock for XFCE?

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I use Xubuntu, which ships with xscreensaver. In the screensaver
settings manager, under the 'advanced' tab, you have an option to
display host name and time on your chosen screensaver.

Cheers,
Les

No, I do not mean that; I mean a screen-saver like the ones at

Well, it's not exactly the same, but the "GLText (clock)" option in
xscreensaver gives a very nice 3D digital clock that can be configured
to show the day/date/time and arbitrary text. It can also move and
rotate. It's all configurable, so maybe you can get it to display just
what you want. It doesn't do an analog clock however.

Thanks, Bob. I would prefer an analog clock, but the one indicated by
you is fine to me.

I have just come across a screen-shot of the screen-saver that I wanted to mean:

Yes, I agree this is a very nice looking clock. Since it's part of KDE,
it's included in my Slackware system (you likely have it too). So I
tried it by running kcontrol and running the test mode - works great. I
guess it's not compatible with xscreensaver, the default screensaver of
Xfce. Perhaps a KDE expert can explain if this is usable somehow under
Xfce without running KDE.

Meanwhile, I sent an e-mail to Jamie Zawinski (the xscreensavers
maintainer) asking him whether he could include a port of kclock in
xcreensavers. Let us see what will happen!

fwiw, I have been using gnome-screensaver because I like the
locking/switchuser aspects of it. To make gnome-screensaver behave
like it was xscreensaver for purposes of xfce, I just symlinked
xscreensaver and xscreensaver-demo to the gnome-screensaver
equivalents. Seems to do the trick with no obvious issues I can see.

andrew at debian:~$ ls -l /usr/bin | grep screen
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 113916 2006-11-24 12:44 gnome-screensaver
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 9020 2006-11-24 12:44
gnome-screensaver-command
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 44716 2006-11-24 12:44
gnome-screensaver-preferences
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6920 2006-09-05 09:26 screendump
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2006-11-17 21:05 xscreensaver ->
/usr/bin/gnome-screensaver
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 2006-11-09 10:38 xscreensaver-demo
-> /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver-preferences

I remember seeing a post in the mepislovers forums about how to get kde screensavers working with xscreensaver. (KDE screensavers were broke for a while I think)

http://www.mepislovers.com/forums/index.php

The search function is broke on the forum so you'll have to use google

Or try this:

http://www.google.ca/search?q=kde+http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mepislovers+xscreensaver&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Hope this helps

That is interesting.

It presents me with a puzzle. I do not have an .xscreensaver folder.
When I make a change to xscreensaver settings, the change is remembered
but not, it seems, recorded anywhere in the .config folder.

What mysterious forces are at work here?

It works for me, although I get an error from X in the upper left corner
of the root window, something about "Attempt to access private resource
denied"

I get here the same error. Has someone meanwhile found a workaround?

A .xscreensaver FILE. Not a folder, and not in .config. Unless
something's odd with PCLinuxOS
